The Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines), endorsed by the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) in 2014, provide a framework for small-scale fisheries governance and development. To support their implementation, a Global Strategic Framework (SSF-GSF) was put in place as a partnership mechanism giving small-scale fisheries actors, government representatives and other stakeholders a space to collaborate at a global level. Since their endorsement, governments, small-scale fisheries organisations and other stakeholders and partners have been working to ensure that the SSF Guidelines are known and applied. Today, a few years down the line, various experiences exist of SSF Guidelines implementation support and a discussion around these experiences would be useful to guide continued efforts. Accordingly, the SSF-GSF Friends of the SSF Guidelines group, consisting of selected FAO members [1], and the Advisory Group (AG) representing small-scale fisheries and Indigenous peoples organisation [2], proposed this webinar to showcase experiences of applying the SSF Guidelines at different scales, by different actors, and in different contexts. It allowed sharing approaches and lessons learnt and to discuss how the implementation of the SSF Guidelines, can be further promoted to enhance the contribution of the small-scale fisheries sector, to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including with regard to food security and nutrition, and equitable development for men and women in the sector and beyond. On the eve of the 34th session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI), the webinar provided inputs to ensure synergies between the implementation of the SSF Guidelines and the objectives of the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA2022), and the UN Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF).
