From the 18th to the 24th of November, the Regional Advisory Group (RAG) in Africa meets in Cape Town, South Africa not only to take part into a Fisher-to-Fisher exchange and training co-organised by Masifundise Development Trust, TNI, FIAN and Centro Internazionale Crocevia, but also to plan for its strategy at the continental level.
The meeting reunited the members of the World Forum of Fishers People (WFFP), the World Forum of Fish Harvesters and Fish Workers (WFF), Indigenous Peoples of Africa Co-ordinating Committee (IPACC), the Réseau des Organisations Paysannes et des Producteurs Agricoles de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (ROPPA), Awfishnet and PROPAC coming from Gambia, Tunisa, Senegal, Botswana, Kenya and RDC together with one representative of the SSF-GSF Global Advisory Group.
The meeting aims to strengthen the solidarity of the members of the International Planning Committee participating in the regional platform, to create new alliances and partnerships with no-IPC organizations at regional level to cooperate in carrying out the IPC SSF Guidelines’ people centred assessment and to strengthen the capacities of the members.
During the first 2 days of training, the members of the African RAG were joined by inland and costal local fisher communities’ representatives coming from different Regions of South Africa, with the aim of creating a space of solidarity and exchanges for small-scale fishers’ people ate the African level thus to strengthen the young leaders and activists’ capacities.
The group will also engage in the 4th World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress, taking place in Cape Town in these very days.
The meeting represents among others, an opportunity for African RAG members to meet after 2 years of only virtual work, reconsolidating the unity of the movements and organising for actions on support of the SSF Guidelines implementation in the African region.
